Located in Taipei, northern Taiwan, the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute (TFRI) is a center for organizing research throughout the province. With six branch stations (Fushan, Lienhuachih, Chungpu, Liukuei, Taimalee, Hengchun) its studies concern the long-term sustainable management of the forests. The forests, by the way, cover over half the land area of Taiwan.Here are some of the official functions1 of the TFRI, as written by Dr. Jenq-Chuan Yang, Director-General:
- promote international forestry cooperation
- recover precious plants and animals
- selectivly raise native and high-quality introduced tree species
- improve forestry cultivation and biological techniques
- manage watersheds
- improve forest products procesing technology
- raise the quality of nature education and forest recreation
